Biography
King With No Throne began as early as October 2000. In those days Reto Wittwer traveled to Sydney to explore and to play music. Though there was nothing defined it happened that one drummer called Kasem Chouja was introduced by a Nadia who, originally from a city called Perth, moved to Sydney. Both Reto and Kasem began to build material in what proved to be a happy creative pairing. Their first gig was at a birthday party for Arianna in April 2001. The next six months were dedicated to building more material and further defining the music which at this stage was best described as trance, drum and bass. The songs were often over ten minutes long with smooth electro build ups and complex drum rhythms to boot. In May 2002 Daniel, a Sydney based musician and singer joined and the band called itself Topenkin. The band gigged in Sydney till December 2003 when they teamed up with another member called Daniel, a Sydney bass player and musician. Topenkin, now a band consisting of four members and producing a wider sound spectrum gigged rather successfully as an originals band in Sydney. In time both Daniel the bass player and Daniel the singer were no longer part of the band due to those irresolvable issues between musicians that cause so much heat and steam as to resemble a major incident that falls just short of murder. Time came for Reto and Kasem to think what would be next.
In July 2006, both surviving members moved to London, but not before auspiciously performing at Reto's home town Schaffhausen, a distinct and charming town just outside of Zurich. In the following months both Kasem and Reto struggled in that god forsaken town called London. During this defining period, which lasted till February 2008, Kasem and Reto became known as King With No Throne. The reception they received was quite enthusiastic, and many felt the band was progressive and also within grasp of contemporary audiences.
In February 2008, Kasem returned to Sydney to gain a teaching qualification and returned briefly in July 2008 and again in December - January 2009. Though apart, they still wrote new material and in October 2009 Kasem returned to Schaffhausen for ten months to gig and record new material. This period was particularly rich, and defined the band, placing King With No Throne on a higher level of song writing, musicianship and purpose. In August 2010, King With No Throne played at Das Festival in Schaffhausen, Switzerland where certain high profile bands such as Simple Minds played. At present King With No Throne are writing new material and plan to gig in Europe in December 2010.
