- Description
This piece is one of the compositions by CROME's leader and saxophonist, Sam Urscheler. Borrowing colours and sounds from jazz and classical music, although without improvised solos, "Tides" conveys the image of waves of the sea that are coming and going, rushing to important heights and calming down again. The haunting melody, played by the soprano saxophone and then by the two violins is set in an 11/16 time signature, giving the piece a unresting feeling contrasting with the soothing melodic line. The middle part starts off with a lyrical melody that is handed down from the violin to the viola, then to the cello, culminating in a dissonant crescendo.
