Erlkönig is a ballad and poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is one of his most famous works and was written in 1782.
Originally it comes from the Danish with the name Ellerkonge (fairy king). Johann Gottfried Herder translated it into German and possibly confused elf with alder. Goethe created the ballad as an interlude to the Singspiel Die Fischerin, in which the actress sings the ballad at work. A farmer from Kunitz is said to have actually ridden with his sick child to the doctor in Jena, where the Erlkönig monument still stands today.
'Erlking Snatcher' is a modern version and the lyrics have not simply been translated into English, but have been partly reworded. The twist at the end doesn't appear in the original either, but it just had to be.

Ursprünglich stammt es aus dem Dänischen mit dem Namen Ellerkonge (Elfenkönig). Johann Gottfried Herder hat es in Deutsch übersetzt und möglicherweise, Elfe mit Erle verwechselt. Goethe schuf die Ballade als Einlage zu dem Singspiel 'Die Fischerin', in dem die Darstellerin die Ballade bei der Arbeit singt. Es soll in Jena tatsächlich ein Bauer aus Kunitz mit seinem kranken Kind zum Arzt geritten sein, dort steht bis heute das Erlkönig Denkmal.
'Erlking Snatcher' ist eine moderne Fassung und der Text ist nicht einfach ins Englische übersetzt worden, sondern teils mit neuen Worten versehen worden. Auch die Wendung am Schluss, kommt im Original nicht vor, aber musste einfach sein.
