Writing clean and compelling pop songs is a challenge that even renowned musicians struggle with. To attribute this solely to a lack of ability, however, would be presumptuous. Often, it’s simply the respect for embracing the “less is more” philosophy that holds them back. That’s why it’s refreshing when someone wholeheartedly dedicates themselves to the joy of pop music. That is the case with Brainchild, the band around Basel musician and singer Antonin Queloz. In 2021, they presented an astonishingly mature debut album, Heartbreak Horizon, which promptly earned them the SRF3 Best Talent award in the following month.
Equipped with a voice reminiscent of John Mayer or Jamie Cullum, accompanied by a band featuring respected figures from the Basel music scene, and carried by an effortless lightness, they now move on to their next chapter. The single In The Darkness marks their first release in over two years, arriving as an anthemic statement: grand yet close, nostalgic yet optimistic, catchy yet versatile. In short, pop with depth — that’s Brainchild.
