Elcano: Nautical Metal
Elcano's debut album, ‘The First Circumnavigation Of The World’, traces the vagaries, the successes and defeats of that very enterprise initiated by Fernando Magellan and completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano in the early 1600s.
Elcano – who else? – dedicates a song to “the geese and goslings” which Magellan’s expedition encountered in Patagonia in 1520: “Spheniscus Magellanicus” – the Magellanic penguin.
Join the crew as they happen upon two small islands off the dismal coast where they encounter this noisy creature yet unknown to Europeans. And learn what harrowing fate the population of plump birds meets once embraced by five ships’ worth of hungry sailors … and how it wreaks revenge.
How ironic that Elcano should hail from fully land-locked Switzerland where the seven-piece set out on their musical journey 500 years after the sea-faring explorers did, playing clubs as well as the renowned Elements of Rock festival in 2022, never without their sail, treasure chest and helmsman’s wheel iconically on stage.
In 2023, they released their first EP, ‘Hewn In Water’.
The album ‘The First Circumnavigation Of The World’ was released on CD and double vinyl in 2025 and baptised with brine on 29 March 2025 in the company of Dreams in Fragments, Victorius and Freedom Call.
Elcano's crew consists of singers Marc Meli and Josy Fine, the guitarists Florian Staubli and Reto Wild, Jan Thomas (bass & growls) and Marc Bircher (drums).
‘The First Circumnavigation Of The World’ was preceded by the release of “Tempest! (The Torment Of Santiago)” as the first video single off the album.
