Biography
Breakfast With Schopenhauer was formed in 1995 by four young musicians living in the area around Lugano, southern Switzerland. Fabien (vocals, guitar, keys), Gheretz (guitar), Lele (bass, programming) and KlarK (drums) enjoyed the darkwave sounds of the 80s as well as the avantgarde electro sounds of the 90s. The combination of each members' individual taste eventually forged the sound of BWS that was considered quite unique at the time by the local musical comunity. Their first recording was produced less than a year after their formation: a 3-track studio-recorded demo cassette, with original artwork and a hint at what the future sound of the band would be in the years to come. In fact, the 4tet soon went beyond the standard guitar-bass-drums format by introducing, quite by chance, the use of a Memorymoog synthesiser that thus enabled them to produce a more sophisticated sound that audiences would remember distinctively. The follow-up self-titled 4-track EP came out in 1997 on CD and was quite sucessful in the region, to the point that the band managed to land several gigs and open-air concerts, and even win a national competition that would bring them, in 1998, to play in Berne for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Federal state. Until the breakup of the band, around the end of the year 2000, the four musicians played more concerts and worked on new material that would, unfortunately, never be officially published. The 4tet were now using samplers and more modern synths, as well as beat boxes over which acoustic drums would be played. A few of these tracks, that were recorded in Gheretz' home studio, can be heard exclusively here on Mx3.
