Biography
“Circle and Square”, an electronic duo based in the Geneva area in Switzlerland, is the brainchild of Laurent Szczesniak and Charles Mugel.
The encounter of warm analog sounds and layered sound sculptures have always been a common point of interest shared by the two friends so it’s naturally that they started working together on an album after a few other common musical projects.
The album produced by the band was recorded and mixed in March 2012 and will be released by the end of the summer of 2012.
Circle and Square is now ready to showcase and share their work to electronic music lovers. This starting point is also a great opportunity to work on a long term development including video clips and the implementation of a photographic imprint as a complement of their soundscape.
After playing together and gathering a strong stage experience in an electro rock band, Laurent and Charles decided to move on to a different, more compact and flexible formation. The use of real analogue and vintage synths, effects and mixing gear combined with today’s most sophisticated software technology led them to apprehend the best of both worlds.
Counting on their strong stage experience performing together in other formations for over five years, the bi-polarity of the project takes the creativity to new heights and creates a real musical intimacy with the exchange, the confrontation and discovery of new horizons.
Bi-polarity best defines itself at the edge where Laurent is more inclined to draw or portrait a tension in his sounds and letting himself be surprised by subconscious directions they might lead to, and where Charles likes to work with layers of sounds and the use of rhythm in developing an overall structure in music. The best way to picture their universe is “live” trying to be as genuine as possible with their audience.
The band has various influences such as Radiohead, Moderat, Pink Floyd, Burial, Neil Young, Bright Eyes or Apparat.
