LEV TIGROVICH is the alter ego of Xenia Wiener and Janos Mijnssen – a duo that combines electronic music and pop with theatrical thinking. Their songs, sung in Russian and English, celebrate ambivalence and contradiction. They call it drama pop – music that dances and thinks, sparkles and doubts in equal measure. Between pathos and play, Lev Tigrovich invent their own sound theatre in which everything is meant seriously – even the jokes.
That many of the lyrics are in Russian is a gesture of belonging. Wiener’s mother is from Russia, and the language is part of her biography. After the full scale invasion of Ukraine, singing in Russian initially became a crisis; today it is more conscious than ever – an artistic act against cultural narrowing, and the refusal to let an oppressive Regime claim their language.
