Listening to Nadine Yomi’s music feels like arriving at a lavishly set table, where each song brings a sense of rest, peace, and renewal. Her music meets us in the busyness of life and leads us to slow down and experience a deeper connection with ourselves, each other, and God. Her lyrics express the often unspoken, universal longing for something more, carried by her ethereal and soulful voice.
Nadine Yomi means “hope divine”, and this theme is woven through everything she creates. Growing up in Switzerland, she learnt the importance of hope when witnessing family members struggling with mental illness. She reflects on this saying: “When faced with hardship, I naturally started exploring the meaning of hope - the stubborn hope that’s tested when everything else breaks apart.”
Relocating to London to pursue songwriting, Nadine started reaching a new audience with her life-affirming message, through live performances in churches and Sofar Sounds showcases, and BBC Radio. Sadly after her release of her EP ‘Rise’ at the end of 2017, it was a shock to lose her younger sister to suicide. Coming face-to-face with grief, new deeply personal songs started emerging, drawing on the Psalms, on the topic of resilience, and the importance of being rooted in solid ground while things around her were shaking.
Nadine is now set to release her debut album, “The Longing Soul,” which draws from her journey of rooting herself in faith and hope in God. Devotional songs reminiscent of why she first started writing.
“For me, songwriting was always about connection and devotion. I remember as a child I started writing songs as prayers. It always felt like there was a beautiful atmosphere around me when I started singing.”
Drawing from varied expressions of devotional music including gospel and contemplative worship in the likes of Taize, “The Longing Soul” takes you on a spiritual journey into divine love that sees joy grow in the hardest of circumstances.
