A few years ago, I met a very interesting person. A perfumer from Gabon who lived and worked at the riviera of the Lake Geneva, very close to Montreux. He worked for many major licensors such as Channel, Dior and Armani and was known for his heavy and opulent compositions. Like all people in his field, he was also talented in many other artistic disciplines. Especially he loved the music.
He therefore began to build a very special perfume organ in his atelier. In addition to the classic functions of a perfume organ, he built in a keyboard that was connected to organ pipes and special electronics. The resulting tones were in turn combined with one of the individual base fragrance notes.
After we had been friends for a long time and had often talked about his project, one day he allowed me to play his organ and record my session on a Studer Revox tape machine. While I was playing, the whole room was filled with an incredibly warm and heavy scent that I had never smelled before. It reminded me of the wet savannahs of the Batéké Plateau and at the same time of the dense spruce forests in the deep valleys of the Vaudoise Alps. A heavy scent of sensual depth that almost took my mind away. The more expressively I played, the more intense the bouquet became, while its nuances were constantly changing.
My song PERFECT PERFUME was written on this early summer evening with sultry temperatures and thunder and lightning on the French side of the Lake Geneva. You can hear the original version here, which I recorded in my friend's workshop. By the way, I'm not allowed to mention his name. Because of the licensor's payola rights. And I'm also very sad, because just a few weeks after our last meeting he moved to Chicago. For a new assignment from an American licensor and also for the further development of his extraordinary organ. He will meet with Larry Heard there to work on new compositions.
I will never forget another anecdote from this supernatural and emotional experience that day: After my recording session, my friend and I strolled along the Veytaux Riviera for a while. The sun was sinking behind a black thundercloud when we saw an octopus pull itself up along a post of a lakeside jetty, glide over it, look at us briefly and then dive back into the mirror-smooth and already dark water of the lake.
