"Chata" is the first single from Da Cruz's upcoming album "Som Sistema".
It is Da Cruz's second collaboration with British-Nigerian rapper Magugu, "the man with probably the deepest rap voice in the world", as Mariana Da Cruz explains.
"The idea for the song came to us after a concert in Paris," explains Mariana Da Cruz. "We heard a Brazilian woman complaining about a colleague: “She's annoying, annoying, annoying!” (“Ela e chata, chata, chata!”). We thought it was funny; it sounded like a song. And of course, we've been interested in the Shatta music style for a long time, which you can probably hear in the song."
For this song Da Cruz dug out some dusty vintage synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines from the basement.
With her new album, Mariana Da Cruz sets out in search of her African and Brazilian roots. But she doesn't do this by reflecting on musical traditions; she does it by drawing on the latest developments in modern black music.
The spectrum ranges from South African Gqom to Brazilian Baile Funk to Caribbean Shatta and various styles of new African club music. There are traces of Angolan Kuduro, Brazilian Phonk and Trap. From these elements, Da Cruz has created a self-sufficient, contemporary Brazilian music with song character and a distinctive message.
