In 1951, Nabokov taught courses on Russian and world literature. One student, who was studying Russian in the beginner’s class, recalls that during the first session, Nabokov noticed a yellow vase with blue flowers on the table. He walked up to the blackboard, wrote “yellow blue vase,” and asked the students what it meant (a yellow-and-blue vase). “It sounds almost the same as ‘I love you’ in Russian,” he explained, adding, “This is probably the most important phrase I will teach you.”
