Inspired by video games and heartbreak, username:grec writes music dedicated to low-resolution memories, fantasy and playful folktronica. Her live performances combine the natural sounds of her voice and saxophone with their processed counterpart on a backdrop of pixelated synth polyphony.
Her debut EP (scheduled for release in Summer 2026) Music for Video Games and Heartbreak is dedicated to the peaceful loneliness found in post breakup routines. Traversing a familiar space, now empty. The signs of life are still there but abandoned, the bed is warm but it’s cooling.
Imagine being a quiet train carriage or an empty video game lobby. The low-poly count barren landscapes of a 2000s video game. Maybe a city with only a handful of buildings due to CPU and memory limitations. Traversing these virtual landscapes feels like remembering; seeped in nostalgia, low resolution, saturation too dim or too exaggerated There is comfort in the familiar, well travelled paths of our memories, but they are not real, only ghosts.
username:grec is the alias of British musician Grace Macdonald (1996*). She performs most frequently as a saxophonist, often with electronics and her own voice. With roots in the classical music scene, Grace has gradually transitioned over the past decade into her own niche of experimental pop with influences of ambient, folk and classical music. Her musical journey led her away from her home island of Jersey in 2013 to the city of Manchester, followed by Berlin and finally Zürich, where she has been living since 2020.
