today q3 is a collective of musicians that gathers numerous instrumentalists around the rhythmic tandem of simon and brian quinn: the quartet q3_tomorrow, with trumpeter michael neff and vibraphonist luca gusella, performs yet unpublished original compositions informed by contemporary musical concepts, while saxophonist max pizio and pianist gabriele pezzoli complement the electric project q3_today which often features parisian turntablist sosa dj. max de aloe, playing chromatic harmonica and accordeon, integrates q3_yesterday: a live soundtrack to the renown silent film nanook of the north. founded in 2004, q3 united the three brothers nolan, simon and brian quinn into a trio whose distinctiveness lay in the repertoire of original compositions cleverly fusing elements of jazz with rhythms and sounds of drum'n'bass. on cue, the trio's first album, is published in 2005 for the altrisuoni label. featured by festivals and clubs all over europe, the trio is awarded the 2005 nescafé gold jazz award, the zkb jazzpreis 2006 and the prize for best band at the 2007 bucharest international jazz competition. output of the trio’s teamwork with director stefano knuchel and animation artist gionata zanetta is the dvd production introducing q3 live and on tour, published at the 60th locarno international film festival in 2007. the three brothers are also commissioned an original soundtrack for the historic film nanook of the north (robert flaherty, 1922): the excellent feedback from both public and critics lead to numerous screenings all over italy and switzerland. together with singer-songwriter gionata, q3 contributes a track to the vasco rossi tribute album published by italian music magazine mucchio selvaggio in july 2008.
