Alternative Pop mixed with Indie and elements of Electronica: That’s Streets of Roya, the latest project of mysterious songwriter Michael Wespi. If the feedback for his debut single ‘All Eyes On Me’ is an indication of the future, he’s set to have a bright and successful career ahead of himself. Since its release in late November ‘17 the single generated 250,000 streams on Spotify and got added to numerous notable playlists such as New Music Friday Germany, Feel good Indie, Soul ‘n’ The City etc. as well as Apple Music’s ‘Best of the Week’. Furthermore, he managed to score a synch in one of Germany’s most watched TV shows ‘Berlin Tag & Nacht’ on RTL2.
Now Wespi is back with not only one but two new songs! Lead-single ‘Prisoner’ is a song of fragility, inviting you to explore your inner self. Wespi states that the lyrical content of the song should be interpreted by everyone individually. He doesn’t want to manipulate or encroach into people’s imagination by divulging his take on the track. He further explains that ‘Prisoner’ is simply one of those tracks that has always been there in the back of his mind, without knowing where it actually came from. Two years ago, Wespi started performing the song at various open mic sessions during his stay in Berlin, which resulted in a number of different versions. Now in 2018, we are finally getting to hear what after years of work, has become the final version.
As a bonus, Streets of Roya are going to release a b-side called ‘Change’, which shall demonstrate the musical spectrum of the project a bit more in detail. Pulsating at times, Streets of Roya’s energetic yet intimate sound is based around the playing with contrasts, allowing the songs plenty of room for movement and surprises. With his unique voice and playful guitar-sounds, Wespi manages to create an escape for the audience.
Wespi – Originally from Zurich, Switzerland, is not only a musician but also a globetrotter. He’s lived in London, Berlin and more recently Los Angeles. Beneath the hot Californian sun is also where he wrote and produced his most recent material for Streets of Roya, which can really be felt on his new material.
