Cloudspotting is the new album by Namaka. Written, produced, and recorded by Philipp and Sophie between Zurich and Brussels, using a tape recorder and a laptop.
This album takes a low-key stroll through Namaka’s sonic playground. E-bass melodies melt into ambient episodes, while synthesizers lazily drift over drums that resonate as though recorded in a dripstone cave. The vocals - both sung and spoken - effortlessly float above the music, deeply honest, intimate, and haunting.
The opening track, Overflow, reflects on the relentless flood of daily life and the constant noise of society. Always in motion, we rarely take the time to turn inward, to pause, reflect, and truly understand who we are and what we want. This song sets the tone for the album, framing it as both a personal and collective reflection on how we relate to the world around us.
With its layered production, moody textures, and introspective vocals, recorded on a 4-track tape recorder, Rain On My Heart reveals a new side of Namaka. It also marked a pivotal moment in the creative process, inspiring the three short pieces Clouding, Blooming, and Banding. Like clouds passing through the album, these tracks offer a contemplative thread, adding cohesion and emotional resonance.
The most personal one on this record is Generation Clouds. It explores the roots of inherited memory within the context of family. From mother to daughter, from parent to child. It is a tribute to the stories that live on within us, even if they didn’t start in our own body or mind.
Cloudspotting is like lying in the grass or on a warm rooftop, watching clouds float by and letting your thoughts wander. Tuning out the constant noise around us. Instead, this album serves as a call to daydream – an activity that is, by the way, truly underrated – and gives the perfect soundtrack for a cool walk toward self-empowerment.
