The song is about a bum that I met in the bathroom after surfing in San Diego. He was cussing and I was trying to get out of my wetsuit. I had enough and told him to stop. He did immediately. I felt bad. I asked him if he ever prayed. Something about his eyes changed. I saw a hope that I didn’t expect and a soul behind what I first thought was a madman. He pulled out a little green pocket Bible from his jacket pocket. We talked about life. After we said our goodbyes, he picked a rose from a city park rose bush and gave it to my mom, who was waiting down the beach. I was still in the bathroom. He didn’t know it was my mom.

Verse 1:
Hey man, you made my day today
Hey man, you gave my mom a rose
I know you said you’re just a drunk
But I pray to God for those

Chorus:
I once wore your shoes my friend – and
I know the meaning of this plain and simple needing
I walked a thousand miles, my friend – and
I know your shoe size and sandy soul blue time

Verse 2:
Hey man, you made my day today
I saw the light deep in your eyes
I pray a million smiles for you
Lord, give this man the freedom life

Chorus 2:
I know just where you’ve been my friend – and
I know your shoe size and worn-out soul tread life
I know a place we’ll meet again
We’ll toast to new life – Heaven is the new wine

Reprise:
Where you’ve been my friend – it doesn’t matter
We’ll toast to new life – Heaven is the new wine (repeat)
